On April 14, 2022, FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. and one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, in collaboration with VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) is launching its 11th consecutive year of the FedEx Delivers Heartbeats Rural Outreach Clinic. The program has enabled access to free specialty healthcare and medical treatment for congenital heart disease for children in rural areas of Vietnam.
With top cardiologists and surgeons from Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Da Nang, the mobile clinics travel across the country to 22 provinces – Nghe An, Gia Lai, Quang Ngai, Thai Nguyen, Son La, Lang Son, Ninh Thuan, Lam Dong, Kien Giang, Binh Dinh, Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Ben Tre, Tien Giang, Lai Chau, Dak Lak, Quang Nam, Binh Thuan, Tra Vinh, Quang Binh, Dien Bien, and Bac Kan – to provide 50,000 children with access to quality healthcare services. The clinic visits include patient registration, diagnosis, and surgery plans for patients and their families. The 2022 program has been expanded to include screening for hypertension and diabetes for more than 1,000 children and adults.
Access to healthcare in remote areas has become more limited due to COVID-19, making the role of outreach clinics ever more vital. To maximize their impact, each clinic practices strict quality care while minimizing risks of infection by following guidelines from public health authorities.
Children diagnosed with a heart condition that requires surgery are placed on the national cardiac surgery waiting list. Arrangements are also made so that post-operative care does not include expensive and long trips to hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, or Hanoi.
“The FedEx Delivers Heartbeats program has gained even more significance for people who live in remote areas of Vietnam during the pandemic,” said Hardy Diec, managing director, FedEx Express Indochina. “Together with VinaCapital Foundation, we are proud to provide these children with more access to heart healthcare in under-served areas. That is who we are and what we do – providing access to people and possibilities. This year we will extend screening for two common diseases, hypertension, and diabetes. Through early detection we believe people will be able to seek early treatment that allows them to lead healthier lives. We hope these services will give families peace of mind and enable thousands of children to grow to their full potential.”
“We are honored to have a committed donor like FedEx to help implement our life-saving programs,” added Rad Kivette, CEO of VinaCapital Foundation. “For the past ten years, through our strong collaboration with FedEx, VCF’s Rural Outreach Clinic program has reached more than 211,000 poor children all over rural Vietnam. FedEx and VCF are helping these children receive an early diagnosis and medical intervention. Thousands of children are given the chance to live healthy lives while their families are released from emotional and financial burdens. This program not only reduces child mortality but allows families a chance for a better future for their children.”
This initiative is part of the FedEx Cares 50 by 50 goal, which aims to impact 50 million people around the world positively by the company’s 50th anniversary in 2023. Learn more about the FedEx Cares initiative here.
