On December 8, 2023, The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Ho Chi Minh City and the VinaCapital Foundation (VCF) announce the completion of the join project to improve the quality of care for newborns and mothers at the Tra Bong District Health Center (DHC) in Quang Ngai Province. This project falls under the VCF’s Survive to Thrive program, aiming to reduce the mortality rate of neonates and mothers, enhance local healthcare staff’s expertise, and ease the pressure of transferring patients to higher-level healthcare facilities in challenging rural areas.

Tra Bong district is one of the 74 poorest districts in Vietnam for the period 2021-2025. Being a mountainous district with complex terrain and over 66% of the population belonging to ethnic minorities, mainly the Co people, Tra Bong District Medical center faces challenges in terms of infrastructure and equipment for timely healthcare for the people, especially minority mothers in remote villages who must traverse mountainous roads to the district health center for childbirth. Many cases have to be transferred to the provincial hospitals, adding risk to patients and pressure on the local healthcare system.

With the valuable support from The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Ho Chi Minh City, the Survive to Thrive program timely equipped the Tra Bong District Medical Center with 11 pieces of essential medical equipment for maternal and child health care, including an incubator, 01 bilirubin meter, 02 pulse oximeters (SPO2), an obstetric monitor, 01 Doppler fetal monitor, 01 crash cart, 02 blood pressure monitors, 01 Pediatric ICU bed, and 01 vein finder. The program organized a 2-day advanced pediatric emergency resuscitation training course for 37 healthcare professionals at the Tra Bong District Medical Center and 15 health clinics in the district, focusing on crucial skills in pediatric emergency care and treatment, especially for newborns.

At the handover ceremony on December 8, 2023, Mrs. Eva Kim, Consul of the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Ho Chi Minh City, stated: “The German Consulate General is honored to be able to contribute to such a meaningful project of improving the health of women and children. We are moved by the success stories of the “Survive To Thrive” Program. And I am particularly happy that I can be here personally today to witness the immense impact and meet everybody who is working so hard to implement the project. I sincerely hope that we can continue our collaboration in the future. Thank you very much!”

Mr. Rad Kivette, CEO of VCF, added: “Since 2009, through the Survive to Thrive program, the VinaCapital Foundation is committed to stop the runaway rates of maternal and neonatal mortality rates in ethnic rural areas nationwide. Together, we strive to ensure that every mother and newborn receives the quality care they deserve, regardless of geographical and economical challenges. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Ho Chi Minh City for their invaluable support, marking another milestone in our journey to create healthier communities.”

Since October 2022, The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Ho Chi Minh City has sponsored the implementation of two Survive to Thrive projects in Son Tay and Tra Bong districts, Quang Ngai Province, providing essential medical equipment, various types of medical supplies, and conducting two training courses to enhance the skills of the healthcare workforce in these two districts. The contributions of The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany Ho Chi Minh City have enabled the Survive to Thrive program to deliver 445 medical pieces of equipment for 68 hospitals in 13 provinces and cities, saving the lives of over 42,000 newborns and supporting tens of thousands of mothers nationwide.
