Gia Hung, a little boy from Ninh Thuan, was diagnosed with a severe congenital heart defect when he was 6 months old. His diagnosis followed a period of persistent coughing and high fever, prompting doctors to recommend early surgical intervention.

For Gia Hung’s family, the joy of welcoming their firstborn was quickly overshadowed by the financial strain caused by medical expenses. His grandfather took on physical labor, his grandmother worked in an apple orchard, his aunt helped at a local food stall, and his father worked as a laborer, while his mother cared for him at home. The family, spanning three generations, lived together in a small rented house in the countryside with a meager monthly income of 5 to 6 million VND (200 to 250 USD). Since discovering his severe illness, Gia Hung’s parents had to borrow money from relatives multiple times to cover the costs of medical examinations and medication. The surgical indication, amounting to hundreds of millions of VND, left the family feeling overwhelmed and helpless.

Recognizing their situation, the province of Ninh Thuan connected the family with VinaCapital Foundation’s Heartbeat Vietnam program, which facilitated Gia Hung’s surgery. With the generous support of the Vietnam Youth and Student Association in Japan (VYSA) through the Heartbeat Vietnam program, Gia Hung underwent successful surgery in late February 2024. Under the attentive care of his parents and medical professionals, he made a remarkable recovery, regaining his health.

Heartbeat Vietnam extends sincere gratitude to VYSA for their support in giving Gia Hung a healthy heart. With the collective efforts of compassionate individuals, Heartbeat Vietnam believes that many more disadvantaged children with congenital heart defects can be treated and have a healthy future.
